Girls on film: Winona Ryder in Mermaids

There are few films with line ups as iconic as this one. With Cher starring as a glamourous and eccentric mother and Christina Ricci in her first starring role, Mermaids (1990) is a film with more memorable moments than most. Winona Ryder’s character is a 15 year-old girl who is obsessed with Catholicism despite the family’s Jewish heritage. Her obsession with the religion creates some of the greatest quotable moments.

“Please God don’t let me fall in love and want to do disgusting things.”

This youthful fascination with catholicism is reflected fantastically in Winona’s quasi conservative style throughout the film with knee skimming dresses and loose fit silhouettes.

Our favourite element in Mermaids has to be Winona’s cute cut which sits neatly tucked under her chin. We love the twee styling and the addition of headbands to complete the look which feels both sophisticated and childlike.
