Fix yourself with nature: The Hive Coldpress

Here at Glasshouse we’re always looking for the best natural fix’s and fresh juices can be just the thing to give you that added boost.

The Hive Coldpress are East London’s most nutritious resident with their 100% organic and sustainable juices that come in a range of different flavour combos, all packaged in environmentally-friendly glass bottles. As well as being utterly delicious The Hive Cold Press also have rejuvenating qualities and health perks, so we spoke to co-founder Ilaria about the benefits of coldpress.

So what’s special about cold press juicing?

Cold pressing is the best extraction method possible when it comes to juicing. By cold pressing our ingredients they aren’t exposed to any kind of heat, which causes oxidation and in turn loses the nutritional benefits of each ingredient. With no heat involved, all the nutrients last for up to 72 hours, without the use of pasteurisation or the addition of any additives.

Cold press juice gives you the opportunity to absorb a concentrated amount of enzymes and nutrients from a quantity of fruit and vegetables that would otherwise be difficult to consume in one sitting. In a 500ml bottle there is about 1 kg of produce that you can drink up in just a few minutes! At the same time the digestive system has the chance to rest as juices have only trace amounts of fibre, so all the good things go straight into the bloodstream!

How is your cleanse different and where do you source your fruit and vegetables from?

Our ingredients are 100% organic and also biodynamic where possible; we source only top quality produce, which mostly comes from our friends at Perry Court Farm in Kent. It is extremely important to choose the best ingredients, strictly grown in a non-toxic environment, as with juices it all goes directly into the system.

Secondly, the nutritional value of our cleanses, specifically our Green Cleanse, is highly alkalising and low-glycemic. For this reason, within this cleanse there is only a very small amount of fruit and plenty of power greens. The Nutty Green that comes with this cleanse is a shake-like juice that we create by blending greens with our unsweetened almond milk which we make using a high ratio of organic almonds to provide good fats and proteins.

How often would you recommend doing a cleanse?

This entirely depends on the reason for it. If the aim is to target some specific symptoms or disease, or the level of toxins are quite high, then a 3 day cleanse once a month for a few months is probably a good start. If it’s something to incorporate into an already quite healthy lifestyle it could be 1 day a week.

And any suggestions for those new to cleansing? What can they expect to feel like?

For those who never tried a cleanse I definitely recommend it. You’ll be surprised at how great your body will actually feel after and the difference that that makes to your mood and energy levels.

I always suggest to take it easy the first time, it doesn’t have to be a full 3 day cleanse, it can be just 1 day using ingredients that our customer normally enjoys. There are 3L of juice (there are 6 x 500ml juices in every cleanse) so you won’t be hungry at all and the juices will give you enough calories and plenty of nutrients to get you through the day. But if you’re nervous we recommend something to nibble on - our Activated Nuts are a good choice, or a piece of fruit.

Always plan your cleanse; the cleaner you eat before, the easier and more gradual it will be for your body to get into the cleanse. Drink plenty of water to help stay hydrated and also to contain the appetite. Everybody is different - some people feel more energised and prefer staying busy, while others feel more slow-paced than usual. Always listen to your body.

What kind of response have you had? Who is your typical client?

There are endless reasons why people should occasionally cleanse. Some of our customers cleanse to balance out bad eating habits, others just to get higher energy levels, to get ready for a wedding or to recover after being sick.

I personally believe most diseases come from a poor digestive system and an accumulation of toxins in our body. But the bottom line I think is that living in London can be stressful for our body and our mind, and it might not always be as easy as we wish it was to be healthy all the time. It’s just a real gift to yourself to get refuelled of everything our body needs.

You can find The Hive Coldpress Juices at the G&T Coffee Shop on Cambridge Heath Road at number 204 to get your very own coldpress or get them delivered to your door with one of their juice cleanse plans. Hive recently created a one-off energy and metabolism booster juice for a 24 hour event at Hackney’s Oval Space, so keep posted online for special products and future events!
