Graffiti and tattoo artist Davee Blows lives for his art – and travel! His uniqueness and artistic success have taken him to 17 countries. And that is this year alone! We met up in Chengdu, China to finish up my tattoo. His own ink collection includes two tiny pieces that, for me, speak the charm of Sagittarian ultra-positivity: the coin-sized exclamation “100 PERCENT!” on his thumb and the letters “W-H-A-T” and “E-V-E-R” adorning the knuckles of his hands. Both epitomise the deeply joyful, optimistic and carefree nature of this urban nomad. Davee is not a Sagittarius, but he manifests much of what makes this sign tick.
Sagittarians are born adventurers. They need to explore life in all its facets. This can be physically, through travelling to far-flung places and exotic cultures, or mentally, through study. Like Gemini (also a mutable sign), Sagittarians have an unlimited amount of diverse interests – most of which have to do with finding systems whose principles will make society work and work better. They are born philosophers, and many have a keen interest in religion, science and the workings of law and government. Professions in these areas – as well as in education, sales, travel and politics – attract them.
Like the other fire signs, Aries and Leo, Sag needs lots of freedom for self-expression. Confinement, boundaries and meanness of any kind are its foes. These individuals thrive on optimism, enthusiasm and courage. If you have followed my series on the Zodiac signs, you will know by now that one does not need to be born in the month of Sagittarius to display these traits – having many planets in Sagittarius, a full 9th house (this sign’s natural house) or a prominent Jupiter will do.
Emotionally, people that have a lot of Sag in their chart need space and are not easily pinned down. Too much involvement may be experienced as a wet blanket, bringing this sign down from its restless need for expansion and to go ever farther and higher. This sign may prefer to keep it casual, light and fun, even when in partnerships. Unlike Libra and Leo, Sag is not a romantic and is more interested in an energetic and adventurous companion rather than a deeply emotional connection. More often, it may favour several uncommitted relationships. Astrologer Alan Oken goes so far as to call Sagittarius the “bachelor sign”.
Sagittarius may shun heavy personal responsibilities. It wants to reform but not deal with the details needed to implement changes. Primarily, Sag is on a quest to find meaning, where the journey is more important than the arrival. The centaur, half man and half horse (this sign’s symbol), can charge ahead indiscriminately. Confidence is an awesome thing, but Sagittarius can overestimate his/her and others’ abilities. Though mostly well-meaning, this sign can overdo, overstate, overpromise and burn out due to taking on more than it can possibly handle. A visionary, yes. A realist, not so much.
Sagittarius’s beautiful, fiery outgoingness and brutal honesty (foot-in-mouth disease is not uncommon) can cause other people’s jaws to drop at the sheer bluntness and tactlessness they may witness. Boisterously, this sign typically forms strong opinions about pretty much everyone and everything. Hence, arrogance and dogma may rear their ugly heads. In its quest for self-fulfilment, Sagittarius can learn not to override other people’s feelings and needs; that it’s important to consider the results of its actions and motivations; that it will need to make choices as it cannot do it all; that the instinctive sense that everything will be all right in the end, no matter which decision is taken, does not always work out; and that life exists not only in the future but in the NOW, which includes discipline and taking care of the problems at hand.
Ultimately, Sagittarius gives us its uncontrived openness, pure-hearted generosity and natural ability for forgiveness. It shows us how to be a bon vivant and enjoy life without becoming obsessed with the material world. And it helps us see the big picture and future possibilities, inspiring self-discovery, non-attachment to the conventional order, and the vision needed for improving social conditions and humanity’s overall wellbeing.
