Happenings: Yohji Yamamoto Showspace

There’s no denying that we’re always lucky enough to have plenty of cultural must-sees popping up on the doorstep of Glasshouse, however we’re particularly excited about the retrospective of influential Japanese designer, Yohji Yamamoto. Just a stone’s throw from the salon at Live Archives on Mare Street, this exhibition is ignoring all the usual traditions of fashion installations, instead featuring live models as opposed to mannequins and allowing the viewer to choose a selection of Yamamoto’s pieces for them to wear.

Yohji Yamamoto has long been known for his dislike of classic fashion exhibitions, and curator Jeff Horsley has embraced this. ‘There’s a brilliant challenge there, as an exhibition maker. “What can I do to change that?”’ he says. A collection of 60 iconic garments have been sourced spanning Yamamoto’s three decades of success, which have seen him blur the boundaries between fashion and art and lead the way for avant-garde Japanese design.

You can view some of Yamamoto’s most complex pieces up close, including a shibori-detail kimono and a cotton cut-work look from his spring/summer ’83 collection. There will also be the chance to buy a special piece for your own wardrobe, with some of the garments available to purchase. However don’t hang about as this chance to delve inside the archives of one of fashion’s most innovative talents is only running until 8th August…

Yohji Yamamoto: Showcase at Live Archives, 81 Mare Street, London E8 4RG.

31st July - 8th August, 1pm - 7pm daily. Find out more details here.
