Girls on film: Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver

Girls on film: Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver

Soft, brushed curls have landed back in our focus recently with the likes of photographer and hair muse Petra Collins’ strawberry blonde spirals and the 1970s showing no signs of sartorially disappearing. So we’ve dug deep into the curl archives and fallen back in love with Jodie Foster’s full head of ringlets in the iconic Martin Scorsese film, Taxi Driver.

Just like the hairdo, the film was a 70’s classic; a dark psychological thriller about a loner cab driver, Travis, who roams New York’s underworld, scrutinising everything and everyone, whilst growing further detached from reality. A young Jodie Foster appeared in her breakthrough role as Iris, a runaway and prostitute who Travis tries to save from her seedy urban life.

Controversially, Jodie was just a teen when she took on the role and much has been said of the decision to cast a 15 year old in such a provocative part. However her youthfulness only made the character stronger - Foster is naturally charismatic, at ease with herself and wise beyond her years, all the while portraying a Lolita-like vulnerability.

The image of her in a crop top, hot pants and crimson velvet platforms has become synonymous with the film, and it’s a look which is bang-on when we think of the fashion mood of the moment. In a similar vain, Iris’ floppy turned-up hat and fluorescent sunglasses are oh-so-playful and right at home with her youthful spirit and sass.

Here at Glasshouse we adore a natural-looking curl, especially when worn in an all-out disco style like that in Taxi Driver. Sticking out from under her hat they look almost doll-like and remind us of being young and trying to make ourselves look that little bit older (it always ended in disaster). Smooth at the top of the head and curling across the sides of the face, Jodie’s curls are soft and as tight as they could be - you’d probably be able to sleep for days without them flattening.

For natural spiral haired girls or those looking for a head of one-night-only curls, the Organic Colour Systems Keep Curl range is definitely the way to go. Spritz a generous amount of the Memory Spray to hair for extra bounce, volume and curl-hold or apply a small amount of the Memory Gel to towel-dried hair for a more defined, styled look.

This is a big haired look that requires a good dose of attitude and a daring wardrobe to pull it off in full Jodie Foster style. We’re not ones to shy away from any kind of hairstyle, particularly when they’re as bold as Iris’ in this Scorsese classic. Make poker straight a thing of the past with this 70’s inspired ’do that Jodie Foster masters with total teen appeal.
